The six TrackMan numbers worth knowing.

Every shot in an Eagle Bay bay is measured by TrackMan, the same radar the pros use. Most of the numbers can wait. These six are the ones worth understanding, because they explain almost every shot you will ever hit.

Face angle

Where the club face points at the moment you hit the ball.

It decides where your ball starts. Ball setting off right of target? The face was open. Before you rebuild your swing, check the face: it is usually the simplest explanation for a shot that starts offline.

Club path

The direction the club is travelling through impact.

A positive number (in to out) shapes a draw, a negative number shapes a fade, zero is dead straight. If you want to shape shots on purpose rather than by accident, this is the number to watch.

Impact location

Where on the face you actually struck it.

Strikes out of the heel drift right, toe strikes turn left, even with a perfect path. Sometimes the bad swing you are blaming yourself for was just a heel strike. TrackMan shows you, so you stop fixing things that are not broken.

Attack angle

Whether the club is moving down or up as it meets the ball.

Irons like a slightly negative number (hitting down), the driver likes a positive one (hitting up on the teed ball). One glance answers the eternal question of why your driver and your irons refuse to behave on the same day.

Low point

Where the bottom of your swing happens: Before or After the ball.

Irons want After, ball first, then turf. If your low point reads Before with an iron, that is your fat shot explained in one letter. Few numbers fix more mid-round misery than this one.

Carry

How far the ball flies, not how far it ends up.

The water hazard does not care about your roll. Know your average carry for every club, not your best ever, and club choice on the course becomes simple. This is the single most useful number to take from the bay to the course.
